"...leadership to create a world that works for all can and must come from the bottom up through the creative work and political activism of ordinary people..."

David Korten
The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community

Dear Ones,

Please join me at The Madrona Stage Under the Sail for Speakers and Workshops at Island Earthfair. My guiding vision is localization. What can we learn from each other that will build the foundation for creating sustainability in our communities? Governing models are emerging that empower individuals to contribute their skills to achieving progress. Some of these models include Consensus, Compassionate Communication, and Cooperative organizations. We will be exploring these models this weekend, as well as hearing from our neighbors about their successes and challenges of building membership and sustaining participation.

Reflection is the beauty of life and Projection is the willingness to see ourselves in each other. Our workshops will provide opportunities to learn self-skills for creating wellness within. Whether you’re in transition or healing from trauma, the workshops this year will give you the tools for creating harmony and balance in you life. When we seek to heal ourselves we are in turn healing each other and ultimately healing the Earth. Welcome, we've been waiting for you.

Walk in Beauty and Wellness,
Hillery Crocker

MAIN STAGE SPEAKERS

12:00pm - 12:30 pm Saturday - Brahmachari Dayamrita Chaitanya will be the Keynote Speaker at noon, August 5th, on the Main Stage at the 10th Annual Island Earthfair in Paradise Ridge Park on Vashon Island, WA.
Br. Dayamrita has been a disciple of Sri Mata Amritanandamayi (popularly known as "Ammachi" or "the hugging saint") since 1982. He currently directs North American affairs for the Mata Amritanandamayi Math (Ammachi's international service organization) from its US headquarters in San Ramon, CA where he is general manager and spiritual director. He has lectured widely throughout the US and Canada.

Ammachi was awarded the prestigious Gandhi-King Award for Non-Violence in 2002, was keynote speaker at the United Nations' Millenium Peace Summit in 2000, and at the Global Peace Initiative of Women Religious and Spiritual Leaders in 2002 in Geneva.

Br. Dayamrita will speak about the humanitarian work of this international organization, including recent natural disaster relief in the wake of the 2004 Tsunami and following Hurricane Katrina, where he coordinated volunteer efforts and presented former President Bill Clinton with a check for $1 million dollars on behalf of the MA Math. He will also share Ammachi's message of love, understanding, compassion and selfless service.

Br. Dayamrita has just concluded the most recent North American tour with Ammachi this past week in Toronto. The timing of his presentation will be especially rich for gaining an interesting perspective of our continent's current state.

For questions or more information, call Darsana at 463-1310.

3:00pm - 3:30pm Sunday - Barbara Gilles - Nurturing Community Builders with Compassionate Communication
Barbara has keynoted conferences world-wide. She has given more than a hundred presentations on civilization building. She began in the early 80's giving presentations at libraries and public school about the importance of healthy nutrition for a healthy mind. After being a citizen diplomat to the Soviet Union, in 1986 Barbara made over twenty-five presentations to churches, rotary clubs and schools. In 1988 she was the speaker for her team that partnered with the local people for building the Seattle/Tashkent Peace Park in the Soviet Union. In 1993 she won a Class Act award in Seattle, Washington and was televised as she spoke about love radiating from an open compassionate heart, as being one of the most important qualities of a teacher.

3:00pm - 3:30pm Sunday - Hong Tran
Justice and public service have been her lifelong passion. Hong Tran has never accepted mediocrity or complacency in her work - and could no longer accept such attributes in her US Senator. For those reasons she decided to leave a career and job that she loved and cherished in order to run for US Senate.

In her words: “People will vote for a candidate who connects with them through sound ideas and sound values, not just a multi-million dollar campaign. I am running a grassroots campaign because we don’t need another millionaire in politics. I am in this campaign as the mother of a working family because this is who I am and this is who I represent – Washington State’s working families.”

MADRONA STAGE SPEAKERS & WORKSHOPS
FRIDAY

  • Participate in creating a rope labyrinth of the ancient Cretan style associated with Theseus and the Minotaur. Betty Hawkins, who has studied labyrinths for 8 years, will discuss background and history of the labyrinth as we lay it out. She has participated in the construction of the outdoor labyrinth at the island Episcopal Church, the one at McMurray Middle School, and has presented history, culture, Greek myth, mathematics, art, and dance as it relates to labyrinths to middle school students though the Artists in Schools program.

6:00 to 7:00 - OPENING CEREMONY
  • This years opening ceremony will continue from the Labyrinth workshop as we will be hosting the ceremony at the freshly built Labyrinth. Join Circle of Sound facilitated by Hillery Crocker with special guests contributing their spiritual traditions. The opening ceremony is a tradition at Island Earthfair and all are welcome to participate.

ABOUT THE CIRCLE OF SOUND
Circle of Sound originated on Vashon Island, in the Puget Sound, outside of Seattle, Washington, USA. The chakra set of crystal bowls have been used in energy ceremonies in and around this area since year 2000. The power of the sound of the crystal bowls has all ways been very obvious for all who have experienced it. In August of 2002 the bowls were joined in circle by didgeridoos. It is said that the didgeridoos bring the sound of Earthly Mother, while the crystal bowls bring the sound of Heavenly Father. Together they create a combination that is truly magical.

This magic was felt by thousands the first time the Circle of Sound played in a large public setting. In collaboration with the City of Seattle for its ceremony on 9/11/2002, a Circle of Sound composed of 21 crystal bowls and 21 didgeridoos played for three hours at the International Fountain of Seattle Center, with the intention of healing all the grief, pain, and sorrow around this tragedy. Many people reported that the sound did indeed help them to find balance, a peace about their grief.

The result of this gathering was a realization of the power of this sound and its potential benefit for many people and places. From this realization comes our commitment to "share the sound" with as many people and places as possible all over the planet. We would love to have you join us!

It is still there today, run by a nonprofit and giving free health care to the indigent as the Carolyn Downs Family Medical Center. For Dixon, the Panthers' defining legacy is that "a bunch of angry kids" simply rose up and did something. They took action. There were no government grants, no blue-ribbon advisory panels. For better or worse, they just did it. "Our saying was: “Practice is the criteria for truth”, Dixon says. “It means anybody can talk, but the truth comes out through action, not rhetoric.”
